The Lipman-Miliband Trust supported this 2023 project, which delivered theatre-based workshops to seven groups of students in six Bristol secondary schools. The grant funding financed the building of seven intricately designed statues, to creatively facilitate a theoretical discussion among students about what to do with monuments to the slave trade in a made-up town.
Through roleplay, collaboration, and negotiation, students researched real-life historical British figures as well as decisions made by real-world communities regarding their problematic monuments, which resulted in each group reaching consensus on the fate of their own monument.
Mango Riot held a temporary exhibition in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre, exhibiting the process of the project, the remains of the statues after the workshop and any replacements the students had asked for. Students said the project helped them develop their own opinions about the history of Transatlantic Slave Trade and relate the issues to real towns and cities.
